The engraving offers a detailed and poignant depiction of the execution that took place on May 13, 1619, at the Binnenhof in The Hague. Central to the image is the scaffold, where Oldenbarnevelt (dressed in black) is attended by figures, while the executioner and soldiers look on. A large crowd has gathered around the scaffold and on the surrounding buildings to witness this political tragedy.
The text at the bottom of the print reads: "'s Landts Advokaat Ioan van Oldenbarneveld, op't Hofschavot in den Haage gereed om onthalst te werven, in't jaar 1619" (The Land's Advocate Johan van Oldenbarnevelt, ready to be beheaded on the Court Scaffold in The Hague, in the year 1619).

This is an essential historical engraving that illustrates the political and religious tensions of the early 17th century in the young Dutch Republic. The conflict between Oldenbarnevelt and Prince Maurice of Orange over the direction of the country culminated in this execution for high treason.
Although the exact engraver sometimes varies per edition (similar prints are known from Simon Fokke and other masters).
