This banknote is a 1 Gulden banknote from 1943, issued for use in the Dutch East Indies. The note is recognizable by the stately portrait of Queen Wilhelmina on the front and the Dutch coat of arms. Notably, the text is displayed in both Dutch and Malay ("Satoe Roepiah").
This banknote has a special history: it was printed during World War II by the American Bank Note Company in the United States. Production took place on behalf of the Dutch government-in-exile and the Netherlands Indies Civil Administration (NICA). These notes were intended for use in areas of the Dutch East Indies re-conquered from the Japanese occupiers. Due to its American origin, the design shows similarities in style and printing technique with the well-known dollar bills of that time.
