Some artworks are not only made to be looked at, but to make you pause. To briefly pull you out of the moment and show you something that has been relevant for centuries.

This is one of those works.

This impressive copper engraving from the late 16th century, designed by Marten de Vos and masterfully engraved by Aegidius Sadeler II, is an example of the narrative power of the Renaissance. The composition, the expression and the exceptionally fine linework make this a work that continues to captivate no matter how often you look at it.

The scene depicts an intensely historical or biblical tableau in which human emotion, tension and interaction take center stage. It is precisely in this that the timeless value of this engraving lies: it reminds us how universal themes such as strength, vulnerability and conviction are, then and now.

This is an original 16th-century work, not a later reproduction. The engraving is in very beautiful antique condition, with a natural, slight discoloration of the handmade paper that enhances its character and authenticity. In the lower center, the paper is slightly discolored. The lines have remained remarkably sharp, underscoring the quality of both the design and its execution.

The whole is enclosed in an elegant, gold-colored ornamental frame in Biedermeier style, which gives the work a warm, classic appearance and makes it immediately suitable for display. Perfect for a study, living room, or as a refined accent in a modern interior.

Similar works are generally in higher price brackets, depending on condition and provenance, and it is precisely the combination of quality, presentation and condition that makes this a particularly attractive piece.

This is a unique work: once sold, it cannot be replaced.
A quiet eye-catcher with a story that has endured for centuries and still has something to say.

This rare engraving is a design by the influential painter Maarten de Vos, one of the most important artists in Antwerp after the fall of Frans Floris. The work depicts the moment from 1 Samuel 21, where David loses his wits to escape the Philistine king Achish. The print is part of the famous series "The Life of Saul and David" and is known for its Mannerist style with elongated figures and complex poses.
