Historical background
VOC duits were minted from the 18th century onwards for use in the overseas trading posts of the Dutch East India Company. They served a dual function:
-
Local currency in Asian territories where the VOC operated.
-
Change for soldiers, sailors, and company personnel.
The Middelburg mint, along with Amsterdam and Zeeland, was one of the most important producers of VOC duits. Due to their intensive use, these coins often show wear, which is part of their charm and proof of an eventful history.
