Jan Luyken and the art of copper engraving

Jan Luyken en de kunst van de kopergravure

A Master from the Dutch Golden Age

The Dutch Golden Age produced not only famous painters but also exceptional engravers who worked with extreme precision and craftsmanship. One of the most renowned artists from this period is Jan Luyken (1649–1712). His copper engravings are admired and collected to this day. At Antiekhuys.nl, our online antique store, we currently have several original engravings by Jan Luyken for sale.

In this blog, we take you through the life of Jan Luyken, the technique of copper engraving, and the important role that the Netherlands played and continues to play in this unique art form.

Who was Jan Luyken?

Jan Luyken was born in 1649 in Amsterdam, the bustling heart of the Dutch Republic. He was a versatile artist: draughtsman, poet, writer, and engraver. From a young age, his talent for drawing and etching was evident, and he grew to become one of the most important illustrators of his time.

He was not only an artist but also a poet and writer. In 1672, he married Maria de Oudens, with whom he had several children, including his son Caspar Luyken, who later also became a meritorious engraver.

After a youth with a rather worldly life, Luyken underwent a strong religious conversion, which greatly influenced his work. Many of his engravings have a biblical or moralistic character and are characterized by emotion, detail, and a powerful narrative. His work invites not only viewing but also reflection and enjoyment of the meaning behind the image.

Luyken is thus primarily known for his biblical, historical, and moralistic representations, but also for his detailed depictions of crafts, professions, and daily life. His work was often used to illustrate books and publications that spread throughout Europe.

What distinguishes Jan Luyken is his ability to capture emotion, movement, and story in black and white lines, something that is particularly difficult with copper engraving.

What did Jan Luyken create?

Jan Luyken made thousands of designs and engravings, including:

  • Biblical scenes

  • Martyrdom and faith scenes

  • Historical events

  • Crafts and professions (for example, in the famous "Het Menselyk Bedryf")

  • Illustrations for religious and philosophical books

His copper engravings are recognizable by:

  • Fine, sharp lines

  • Great attention to detail

  • Dramatic compositions

  • A strong narrative power

These characteristics make original engravings by Jan Luyken highly sought after by collectors of antique prints and copper engravings.

How is a copper engraving made?

For enthusiasts and buyers of copper engravings, the technique is often just as fascinating as the final result. A copper engraving is an intaglio printing technique that requires great craftsmanship.

Step by step:

  1. The copper plate
The engraver uses a smoothly polished copper plate as a base.

  2. The engraving
Using a burin (engraving tool), the artist hand-cuts fine lines into the copper. Each line determines where the ink will later settle.

  3. Inking the plate
The plate is completely rubbed with ink. Then the surface is wiped clean, leaving ink only in the engraved lines.

  4. The printing
Damp paper is pressed onto the copper plate under high pressure. The ink from the lines transfers to the paper, creating the image.

Each print is the result of handicraft. With older copper engravings, such as those by Jan Luyken, you often see subtle differences between prints, which collectors appreciate.

The Netherlands and the tradition of copper engraving

In the 17th century, the Netherlands played an internationally leading role in printmaking. Thanks to the flourishing printing industry, trade, and science, there was an enormous demand for illustrations.

Amsterdam became a center for:

  • Copper engravings

  • Book illustrations

  • Maps and atlases

  • Religious and educational prints

Artists like Jan Luyken contributed to the worldwide dissemination of Dutch printmaking. Their engravings were exported throughout Europe and can still be found today in museums, collections, and antique shops.
