A rare and detailed window into early 17th-century South Asian cartography.
This fascinating, original antique copper engraving is a miniature map depicting the southern parts of India (the historical Vijayanagara Empire, referred to as 'Narzinge & Decan') and the island of Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka). It is a beautiful example of how the world appeared through the eyes of European explorers and cartographers at the beginning of the Dutch Golden Age.
This specific map was originally designed by the Dutch bookseller and publisher Barent Langenes for his influential atlas 'Caert Thresoor' from 1598. However, the version offered here is a later edition, published by Petrus Bertius (Petrus Kaerius) in his Latin editions of the atlas, dating from circa 1603 to 1618.
The map is rich in detail, showing numerous coastal towns, rivers, and islands in the Indian Ocean. The title cartouche in the upper right corner states "Narfinga et Ceylon," while the main title at the top reads "Narzinge & Decan."
