The central point of the image is the spectacular, temporary triumphal arch that was specially erected for this occasion at the Varkenssluis on the Oudezijds Voorburgwal. The engraving shows the royal procession, complete with carriages, riders, and a line of soldiers, passing under the arch.
This event was a highlight of Amsterdam's Golden Age, where the city pulled out all the stops to display its wealth and political status.
The image is plate 4 (or 5, depending on the edition) of the official illustrations in the famous book Blyde inkomst der allerdoorluchtighste koninginne, Maria de Medicis t' Amsterdam, which was published in 1639 by the respected printers Johan and Cornelis Blaeu.
The original designs for the triumphal arches and scenes were made by the painter Claes Moeyaert, after which they were engraved by master engravers such as Salomon Savery or Pieter Nolpe.
This is an essential collector's item for lovers of Dutch topography, historical prints, and the Golden Age.
