An exceptional example by Emanuel Bowen (c. 1748), "Geographer to His Majesty". This copper engraving of the Seven United Provinces is not only a masterpiece, but also historical evidence of the transition to modern, scientific cartography.
As the unique text on the map states, this work was created by consulting leading French and Dutch geographers, in particular the maps of Monsieur Le Rouge (Georges-Louis Le Rouge). The map stands out for its precision: the distances between cities are trigonometrically determined and the coordinates (longitude and latitude) have been corrected based on astronomical observations.
The map is hand-colored and mounted in a classic, heavy wooden frame with a gold border, which emphasizes the stately appearance of this 18th-century document.
