Historical context

Jan Luyken is one of the most important Dutch engravers of the Golden Age. His work is characterized by an exceptional ability to bring together great stories in a single image. It is no wonder that his engravings are collected worldwide and are held in the collections of leading museums.

This engraving depicts a dramatic moment from the biblical Book of Acts. Paul returns to Jerusalem, where tensions arise over his preaching. An angry crowd seizes him and threatens to kill him. Eventually, he is protected and captured by Roman soldiers.

Precisely this moment was chosen by Jan Luyken because it serves as a powerful symbol of faith under pressure. The engraving shows not only Paul, but also the chaos of the crowd, the imposing architecture of Jerusalem, and the tension of an event that would have major consequences for the further spread of Christianity.

What makes this engraving special:

  • Engraved by the famous master Jan Luyken
  • Monumental depiction with hundreds of figures
  • Biblical subject of great historical significance
  • Museum-quality detailing and composition
  • Authentic 17th-century Dutch print art
  • Professionally framed and ready to display

This is a work that appeals to both art history enthusiasts and collectors of religious art.

Where would this be beautifully showcased?

Due to its generous size and rich depiction, this is not an engraving that will disappear into an interior.

Particularly suitable for:

  • A library or study
  • A classic or rustic interior
  • A church space
  • A collection of old prints or religious art
  • A prominent place above a desk, cabinet, or reading table
  • A gallery wall

The combination of the monumental depiction and the careful framing makes this a real eye-catcher.

Transparent about the condition

We believe it is important to be completely transparent.

The matting shows some old moisture marks in the lower right corner. These are visible on the matting itself, but have not affected the engraving. The paper of the engraving has remained clean and shows no bleeding moisture damage.

We deliberately chose not to remove the engraving from the frame. The professional framing is in good condition, the matting is dry and stable, and the work can therefore be hung immediately.

Furthermore, preserving an existing high-quality frame is often more sustainable and attractive than replacing it.
