A rare 18th-century maritime masterpiece.
This beautiful hand-coloured copper engraving depicts a 'sea calf' (Vitulus Marinus) off a rocky coast, with classic sailing ships in the background. The work comes from the prestigious series "Das Thierreich" and was engraved by Martin Elias Ridinger, son of the famous animal painter Johann Elias Ridinger.
The engraving is signed in the plate (M.E. Ridinger exc. et sculp.) and retains its original 18th-century hand colouring. This particular subject, combining a marine creature with maritime shipping, is highly prized by collectors of nautical art and natural history.
- Artist: Martin Elias Ridinger (after J.E. Ridinger).

- Date: c. 1768-1770, Augsburg.
