Imagine holding a moment from the Disaster Year 1672–1673 in your hands—a moment when everything was at stake.
The tension of a nighttime attack, the clamor of soldiers and the thunder of cannons…
This refined 17th-century copper engraving depicts the storming of Nieuweschans in 1673, a decisive moment in which the Republic, led by Carl von Rabenhaupt, achieved an important victory over the episcopal army of Münster. At a time when the Republic was attacked from all sides, this battle marked a turning point—proof that strategy and determination could make the difference.
The engraving is attributed to Romeyn de Hooghe, one of the most influential graphic artists of the Dutch Golden Age, known for his lively and detailed news prints. His work was often used in important historical publications, such as Het Tooneel des Oorlogs. What makes his work so special is the way he manages to capture chaos and movement in a balanced composition full of fine details.
Despite its modest size, this print shows an impressive wealth of information: from the fortified bastions to the advancing troops and the surrounding landscape. The engraving is printed on authentic handmade paper and is in beautiful antique condition, with a natural patina that underscores its age.
The margins are small or non-existent because the print was cut out in the past, a detail that is consistent with the use and presentation of such works throughout the centuries.
This is an original 17th-century work, not a later reproduction. Comparable prints by Romeyn de Hooghe are generally in higher price brackets, depending on condition, subject, and provenance.
